Anna Kendrick’s standout performance as ‘Mommy food blogger’ Stephanie, and clever writing make this dark comedy/mystery entertaining. It’s R rated because Kendrick’s ‘best friend’ Emily (Blake Lively) is a psychopath with the usual foul language/sex talk/perverse experiences. The setting is suburbia, and for contrast to all the obscenity; these two ladies each have 6 year old sons who enjoy playdates.
I usually don’t find disturbed mentally ill characters appealing but the focus is on Kendrick and she carries it.
Pacing and cinematography excellent, too. And it was based on a novel – that means a coherent story.
Well done.
